Council and committee volunteer nominations and elections

ASBMB relies on engaged members to move its mission forward, working in partnership with its professional staff. The organization is led by Council, which has all the powers and duties of a board of directors. Council creates and charges committees comprised of member volunteers to inform and implement a host of programs. Terms for volunteers begin July 1 of each year, and term length varies by position and volunteer body.

Call for nominations for elected positions — Open mid-February

For terms beginning July 1, 2025. A nomination form will open in February.

Volunteer election process

Each year, ASBMB solicits nominations (including self-nominations) from members for elected positions within the society. In any year, those positions will include Council members and may include, depending on the year, President, Secretary, Treasurer, Nominating Committee member, and/or Publications Committee member. After the submission deadline, members of ASBMB’s Nominating Committee review the nominations and discuss candidates for vacant elected positions. In its deliberations, the committee considers myriad factors of diversity including scientific expertise, institution and other demographic information. The group also considers factors like relevant leadership experience and previous involvement with ASBMB.

Elected positions open in 2025

  • President (1 vacancy): The President will serve a one-year term as President-elect, a two-year term as President, and a one-year term as past President.
  • Secretary (1 vacancy): The Secretary will serve a three-year term from July 2025 through June 2028.
  • Councilor (multiple vacancies): Councilors will serve a three-year term from July 2025 through June 2028.
  • Nominating Committee (1 vacancy): The Nominating Committee member will serve a three-year term from July 2025 through June 2028.
  • Publications Committee (1 vacancy): The Publications Committee member will serve a five-year term from July 2025 through June 2030.

Qualifications

  • Current ASBMB membership — nominees and nominators must be current members, and nominees must be a member type eligible to hold elected office.
  • Additional qualifications vary by position.

What’s on the application/nomination form?

You may begin the application form, save and exit, and complete the form any time before the deadline.

You will be asked for:

  • Basic candidate information: institution, title, contact information.
  • A statement of interest/nomination statement describing why you or the candidate are interested in serving, including qualifications (max. 500 words).
  • A curriculum vitae (CV) in PDF format.

Self-nominations are permitted. Nominating Committee members and current officers and councilors of ASBMB are permitted and encouraged to submit nominations.

Elections

ASBMB elections are held annually in accordance with the ASBMB bylaws. Positions selected by election are President, Treasurer, Secretary, and select positions on the Publications and Nominating Committees. Per ASBMB bylaws, only active ASBMB regular or industry members are eligible to stand for election.

The Nominating Committee builds a ballot for election each year. Once a ballot is composed, it is shared with voting-eligible members of ASBMB: regular, industry, early-career and emeritus members. A plurality of the votes cast shall be necessary to elect, and in case of a tie vote the decision shall be made by lot. The ballot includes no less than two nominees for each vacant position. ASBMB works with a third-party vendor, ElectionBuddy, to securely administer its elections.

Committee volunteering

Check back this summer for more information on our 2025 call for volunteers!

Serving on an ASBMB committee is an excellent way for ASBMB members to contribute to ASBMB’s mission, goals and objectives, as well as expand their professional network and strengthen their leadership and professional skills.

A call for applications and nominations for committee service will be sent to ASBMB members annually. Note: interest for positions on the ASBMB Nominating Committee and Publications Committee is collected in conjunction with the call for elected positions; see the separate section on this webpage for more information.

After the submission deadline, ASBMB’s committees finalize committee appointment recommendations, which are ultimately approved by the ASBMB president and Executive Committee. Although ASBMB cannot accommodate all nominees for committee positions, we greatly appreciate your willingness to serve and are committed to finding opportunities to engage those who have generously volunteered their time to ASBMB.
