ASBMB offers the following membership types: regular, associate, graduate student, undergraduate student or emeritus. Please see the criteria below for each membership type. Applications are accepted at any time during the year and may be submitted online, by mail or by fax.
Regular Membership ($140)
Available to any individual who holds a doctoral degree and who has published, since receipt of the doctoral degree, at least one paper in a refereed journal devoted to biochemistry and molecular biology. Upon review and approval of the application by the executive officer, the applicant will be accepted as a member and be so notified.
Associate Membership ($70)
Available to any postdoctoral fellow (or equivalent). Associate members may not hold elective office or sponsor papers by nonmembers at the society's annual scientific meeting. Associate members are eligible for automatic promotion to regular membership by certifying that they have attained the necessary qualifications. There is a time limit of five years for associate membership, although associate membership may be renewed by reaffirmation by a mentor or faculty member that the individual remains a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow (or equivalent).
Affiliate Membership ($45)
Available to those who are not eligible for Regular or Associate membership; such individuals would typically include educators at the college or high school level who do not have a PhD and/or have not published a paper in a refereed journal devoted to biochemistry and molecular biology, individuals working in government or non-governmental or non-profit organizations, and members of the public with a strong interest in biochemistry and molecular biology.
Graduate Membership ($25)
Available to any graduate student. Graduate members may not vote, hold elective office or sponsor papers by nonmembers at the society's annual scientific meeting. Graduate members are eligible for automatic promotion to regular membership by certifying that they have attained the necessary qualifications. There is a time limit of five years for graduate membership.
Undergraduate Student Membership ($10)
Available to any student working toward completion of a bachelor's degree and is enrolled as an undergraduate. Student members may not vote, hold elective office or sponsor papers by nonmembers at the society's annual scientific meeting. Student members also receive ASBMB news online.
ASBMB Student Chapters
If there are multiple students at a school, consider starting a student chapter of the ASBMB. Student Chapters members receive additional award and scholarship benefits. Learn more.
Available to any ASBMB regular member who has retired from active employment and whose member dues are current. To apply for emeritus status, supply the ASBMB executive officer with a letter or e-mail stating your official retirement date and pay a one time fee of $100 to convert to Emeritus status. Emeritus members are entitled to all privileges of regular members, except they may not hold elective office.
